New art exhibit focuses on women

MUSKEGON — City Center Arts, 356 W. Western in downtown Muskegon, will open its new show, “The Power of the Feminine,” on March 10.

The show by Michigan artist Sri Soekarmoen McCarthy will run through April 18. A free, public reception will be 6-8 p.m. March 13.

“The Power of the Feminine” is part of City Center Arts commemorating Women’s International Day, and Women’s National History Month. Ten percent of the show’s sales will go to Every Woman’s Place, which provides services for victims and survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault and human trafficking.

McCarthy was born and spent her childhood in West Java, Indonesia. She graduated from Western Michigan University, and works full-time at a West Michigan-based company.

McCarthy began in art when she took a watercolor class in 2015. In 2019, she was among the Top 20 artists featured in the Holland Art in Bloom Tulip Time Festival art competition. She won first place in the Grand Valley Artist/Holland Area Arts Council juried competition in the same year.

“I grew up in a village of wise, intelligent and independent women,” McCarthy says in her artist’s statement for the exhibit. “These ‘Wonder Women’ still surround and embrace my life. With determination they pave their own path.

“We all hear their voices thanks to their unflagging persistence. Together, they empower me to create and pursue my dream. They taught me how to make a world that is kinder, more nurturing, and loving. Every woman in that village is every woman’s mother, daughter, aunt, sister and niece. My own mother used to say: ‘So, you have a dream – what are you waiting for? Don’t forget to help your sister.’ THIS I believe.”

Currently, many of McCarthy’s works are featured not only in the City Center Arts, but also the Galleria in Washington Square in the city of Holland.
