Muskegon Community College Overbrook Theater will present the rock musical “Spring Awakening” Feb. 20-24.

Performances will be 7:30 p.m. Feb. 20-23, and 3 p.m. Feb. 24. Tickets go on sale Feb. 13 at the theater box office. They are $10 for the general public and $5 for MCC students. To reserve by phone, call (231) 777-0324.

With its book and lyrics by Steven Sater, and music by Duncan Sheik, “Spring Awakening” explores adolescent love, the trials of puberty, and friendships that young people build in the face of an uncomprehending world. The original, 2006 Broadway production won eight Tony Awards.

“Spring Awakening” contains mature themes. A talk-back session with the actors will follow the Feb. 22 performance. It will be led by MCC counselor Seth York.

The musical is an adaptation of German playwright Frank Wedekind’s 1891 play of the same title. Wedekind’s original work has been banned and censored.

The MCC production is directed by MCC theater instructor Sheila Kulp Wahamaki, with musical direction by Philip David DeYoung and choreography by Erin Robere.

The acting ensemble is comprised of MCC students Tiffany Bartlett, Allison Boerema, Raymond Brock, Taylor Freed, Cole Halterman, Isaac Hunter, Spencer Kniat, Melanie Lamrock, Brandon Lemieux, Aaron Ponce, Katrina Smith and Rachel Wade. Also in the cast is Muskegon community professional actor Paul Dickens-Jacobs.

Assisting in the show are MCC student director Stephanie Kennert, set designer Tom Harryman, lighting designer Jim Allen, costume designer Susan Eyler, sound technician Mike Council and hair designer Bill Abbott.
