Holiday Homecoming: One-man ‘A Christmas Carol’ returns to where it began

MUSKEGON — Professional actor Tom Harryman’s one-man adaptation of Charles Dickens’ iconic 1843 novella “A Christmas Carol” is coming home.

On Dec. 8 and 9, Harryman will reprise his one-act, 70-minute monologue in Overbrook Theater, the Muskegon Community College venue where he premiered the piece in 2006.
Performances will be 7:30 p.m. Dec. 8 and 3 p.m. Dec. 9.

Harryman’s original production of “A Christmas Carol” was directed by Sheila Kulp Wahamaki, director of the MCC Center. It featured original designs by Richard Oman, Jeanette Wahr, Brian Goodman and Harryman.

Of that production, Muskegon Chronicle reviewer Kimberly Harsch wrote, “Harryman breathes life into the story by weaving classic characters in and out of his narration. His ability to create many characters with body and voice is astounding.”

This time Harryman’s solo show is a fundraiser for the Overbrook Theater renovation. It also marks the kickoff a Golden Anniversary Celebration Year for Overbrook Theater and the college’s Frauenthal Foundation Art Center Building, both of which opened in January 1979.

Harryman, an theatre instructor and chair of the college’s Arts & Humanities Department, has performed his “A Christmas Carol” numerous times.

Among the productions have been at the Frauenthal Theater, the Muskegon Museum of Art for the 2016 Festival of Trees, by candlelight in Hackley Public Library, at Howmet Playhouse in Whitehall, and in Grand Haven and Carson City.

In his show, Harryman takes on nearly 30 different characters: Ebenezer Scrooge, Bob Cratchit, Tiny Tim, Old Fezziweg, the ghosts of Scrooge’s late partner Jacob Marley and of Christmases past, present and future, etc.

Dickens (1812-1870) himself performed “A Christmas Carol” in public, but did so reading from his book. Harryman’s adaptation is memorized.

Tickets are $10 for the general public and $5 for MCC students. To reserve, call (231) 777-0324.
