Muskegon Civic Theatre is in rehearsals for “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike”, playwright Christopher Durang’s award-winning 2013 comedy that is the second production of MCT’s 2017-2018 season.
Appearing in the show that will run Nov. 17 through Dec. 3 at the 169-seat Beardsley Theater in downtown Muskegon will be Walter Mrotz as Vanya, Robin Erdman as Sonia, Vicki Everitt as Masha, Dustin Day as Spike, Robin Willi as Nina and Lorrell Pepple as Cassandra. “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike” takes its principal characters from the stage works of famous Russian playwright Anton Chekov.
Durang’s story finds middle-aged siblings Vanya and Sonia sharing a home in Bucks County, Pa. Proceedings riff on Chekovian sensibilities as Vanya and Sonia bicker and complain about the circumstances of their lives.
Their movie-star sister, Masha, swoops in with her new boy toy, Spike. Old resentments flare, eventually leading to threats to sell the house.
Also involved are a sassy maid, Cassandra, who can predict the future; and Nina, a lovely, young aspiring actress whose beauty worries Masha.
The original Broadway production of “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike” won the Tony Award as Best Play.
