The Muskegon Museum of Art will hold its annual Appraisal Fair on Saturday, October 15, from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Professional appraisers will be on hand to answer questions about the history and value of jewelry, artwork, antiques, and other collection items at the event. Appointments are not needed and items will be evaluated on a first-come, first-serve basis. Entry will be through the MMA gift store at the Clay Avenue museum entrance.
Appraisers will offer verbal evaluations for $15 per item or set of items ($12 for MMA members). The fee includes museum gallery admission ($5-$8 value). Written appraisals cannot be provided at this event, but Appraisal Fair is an inexpensive opportunity that can help you know if it would be worthwhile to pay to get a written appraisal on an item for sales or insurance reasons.
Consumer Reports (September 2014) comments that “You might want to get a written opinion from a professional appraiser if you think something you’d like to sell might be worth a good deal of money-say, $1,000 or more. The results will tell how much a buyer might pay and what and how much insurance you should have to cover it. But written appraisals can be expensive. Most professionals will charge $100 to $300 or more an hour to look over your goods, do some research, and write up a detailed valuation. If you’d like a ballpark figure, you can ask an appraiser whether he or she can look the item over and give you a rough idea of what it might be worth. Expect to pay for at least an hour of his or her time.”
