Pigeon Creek Shakespeare and Grand Valley Shakespeare Festival Present Will Power Day Camp

The Pigeon Creek Shakespeare Company will provide teaching artists for the Grand Valley Shakespeare Festival’s Will Power Day Camp, a Shakespeare-based creative drama camp for students in grades 1-6 (students who have just finished grade 6 are also welcome). This year’s camp will focus on Shakespeare’s play The Comedy of Errors, a comedy with mistaken identities, long-lost families, and a cast of colorful characters. Campers participate in theatre games featuring Shakespeare’s text, learn the play’s plot, rehearse short excerpts from the play, and participate in creative drama activities involving costuming, beginning stage combat, and music. Pigeon Creek’s teaching artists include instructors with experience as elementary, secondary, and university teachers.

This camp will meet on the Grand Valley State University Campus in Allendale on July 18-22, 2016. Campers in grades 1-3 meet from 9 a.m. to noon each day. Campers in grades 4-6 meet from 1-4 p.m. each day. The cost is $110 (some partial scholarships are available).

Will Power has been in operation each summer since 2011, offering elementary students the chance to encounter Shakespeare’s plays in a playful, interactive environment. The camp session ends with a presentation for parents, family, and friends, in which the campers perform selected scenes and share the work they have done at camp.

Parents and guardians who like to receive further information, or are interested in registering a camper, should contact Pigeon Creek executive director Katherine Mayberry by e-mail at katherine@pcshakespeare.com, or by phone at 616-566-4758. The registration deadline is July 1. Those interested in applying for scholarships should apply by June 15.
